'Shin splints' what is it?
Pain along the inner edge (medial) aspect of the shin bone (tibia). Also medically known as medial tibial stress syndrome (MTSS).
It is often caused by repetitive stress on the shinbone and the connective tissues that attach muscles to the bone. This condition is prevalent among runners, dancers, netballers, and military recruits due to the frequent and intense physical activity that can lead to overuse injuries.
What causes MTSS:
MTSS is caused by repetitive stress and overuse of the lower leg muscles causing compressive tensile force on the tibia bone. Contributing factors include sudden increases in activity, running on hard surfaces, improper footwear, and biomechanical issues. Insufficient recovery time can also increase the risk.
Can podiatry help to treat shin splints?
Yes, podiatry is an effective approach for treating shin splints (MTSS). As podiatrists, we focus on assessing and correcting biomechanical issues that lead to this condition. This includes evaluating your gait, foot structure, and any abnormalities that may contribute to your shin pain as well as assessing if your footwear is correct for you.
The initial treatment in podiatry may focus on:
Reducing pain using orthotic devices or modifications to footwear
Exercises to strengthen the feet and lower leg muscles
Improving gait mechanics to reduce stress on the shins
X-ray referral if fractures are suspected.
As your condition improves, we can help develop a comprehensive plan for your gradual return to running and high-impact activities. We’ll support you in achieving your fitness goals while ensuring the health and function of your lower extremities. We can do this alongside your physiotherapist.
